In February 2019, we installed a bug hotel on the Rec. Constructed by our volunteers with a lot of help from the Friends of Claremont Gardens, the bug hotel is filled with the materials (dead wood, bark, cane, leaves, bricks and clay tiles) in which invertebrates can thrive. It is topped off with a ‘green’ sedum roof. Children from St. Agatha’s school helped us arrange the materials within the bug hotel in a way which we think looks good as well as good for bugs.
We will look at other ways we can help wildlife (e.g. bird and bat boxes) but our main focus will be on providing natural habitats where wildlife can make their own homes.
